10 years ago, we were introduced to the husband and wife duo of Thompson Square with their #1 hit song “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not.”
The song was written by frequent writing partners Jim Collins (“The Good Stuff”, “Big Green Tractor”) and David Lee Murphy (“Dust on the Bottle”, “Anywhere With You”). The two were sitting around trying to bounce ideas off of each other until David threw out the phrase Are you gonna kiss me or not? From there they ran with the idea and drew on their youth and what that movie would look like.
Collins told The Boot, “When you’re writing songs five days a week, it’s really a matter of just keeping your pencil sharp. Because you write a lot of songs that do nothing and there’s nothing to them. But what it does is it keeps you sharp. So when you do get an idea like “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not,” you know what to do.“
Thompson Square took those set of lyrics all the way to the top of the charts, going double platinum, and garnering two Grammy nominations.
