Throwback Jam: Diamond Rio’s “How Your Love Makes Me Feel”

By Emily Wagner

There’s just something about those lyrics, “there’s a cow in the road, and you swerve to the left” that stays with you, no matter how long it’s been since you heard the song. That song being Diamond Rio’s second, and longest running #1, “How Your Love Makes Me Feel.”

The song was released in May of 1997 and would go on to spend 3 weeks at the top of the charts, marking their first number one song since “Meet In The Middle” claimed the spot in 1991. It was released as a single off their greatest hits album, which also contained another new song, “Imagine That”, which was released in the fall of 1997, peaking at #4.

Written by Max T Barnes and Trey Bruce, the song is the perfect mix of quirky and sweet; a completely undiscovered way to describe a love, which is what makes the song so popular, both in 1997 and even today. When every other song is trying to outdo each other with sappy stories about love and being almost over the top sentimental, Diamond Rio hit the nail on the head with the message that perhaps any sort of ‘normal’ non-songwriting person could come up with. It’s fun, fast paced, and genuine.

You don’t have to search to hard to figure out why this song shot to the top of the charts. It’s an instant classic, quintessential 90’s country song, what is there not to love?
