Country newcomer Liam Coleman is out with his first single from his upcoming EP project.
Liam, a Massachusetts native, released “Upside” today which is giving his fans and other country listeners a glimpse of who he is as an artist and the type of music they can expect. With the release of this song, Liam shows off both his songwriting chops and the ability to deliver a vocal performance that gets fans excited about what’s to come next.
We caught up with Liam to talk about his new single and upcoming EP:
Raised On It: What was the songwriting process like with Abigail Neilson?
Liam: Anytime you have the chance to write with someone like Abigail who is just such a great person at heart, it’s always easier. We had a lot of fun and it was pretty laid back.
Raised On It: How long did it take for the song to come together?
Liam: The song actually came together pretty quickly. It took about 2 hours to write. I had played it out for about 2 months testing it out with crowds and I just wasn’t feeling the second verse. I got ahold of Abigail and we went back to the drawing board and rewrote the second verse in about an hour. As soon as we were done, I knew we struck gold with the new verse.
Raised On It: Can you talk about the recording experience? You recorded in the same space as your idol Luke Combs. What did that feel like?
Liam: Having the opportunity to record with Ken Royster at Direct Image Studio was amazing. Ken is such a great guy and an amazing producer. I felt like I learned so much from watching the studio musicians work as well as the guidance and recommendations from Ken. Having the opportunity to stand in the same booth where Luke Combs recorded is a feeling words can’t really express. I just kept thinking, “this is the same microphone that Luke Combs sang into.” And it was, I asked.
Raised on It: Why did you decide to make “Upside” the first of 4 songs you’d release?
Liam: I am extremely excited and happy with how all of the songs on this new EP turned out. At the end of the day “Upside” was my favorite and I thought this song would be a good one to introduce the rest of the world to Liam Coleman.
Raised On it: Can you hint at what fans are going to hear with the collection of songs you’re planning to release?
Liam: This EP will allow the listeners to hear an Upbeat love letter with Upside, to one that I refer to as a “happy breakup song” and some insight into my hometown and where I draw some of my inspiration.
Raised On It: Lastly, when people hear you for the first time and this song for the first time, what do you hope they take away from it?
Liam: I hope they love it, which I think they will. I am getting such great feedback on it already. I hope I pick up some new fans that are willing to stick with me so we can see where this journey takes all of us together.
