In 2003, Billy Currington made his debut on the country music charts with his first single “Walk a Little Straighter.
Telling the story from the perspective of a young boy who has to grow up with an alcoholic father, it’s the type of meaningful lyrics country fans have come to expect. The thing many fans might not know is that Currington wrote it from his own perspective.
He had a step father that was an alcoholic while he was growing up. He actually ended up writing the chorus to this song when he was only 12 years old. His step father ended up dying in part because of alcoholism and cancer, but Currington vowed to never go down that same path. The song became therapeutic for him and he tells people that it “was like a weight lifted off his shoulders.”
Learning this about Currington and listening to him singing this song, you can hear the raw emotion that he has from his own experience.
The song ended up peaking at #8 on the charts but for a debut single, that’s a heck of an accomplishment.
