Country’s next big female artist may just be from the other side of the world.
Kaylee Bell was born and raised in New Zealand, but made the move to Australia at 22 to pursue her dream of music. It didn’t take long for her to find success. She has over ten Top 10 singles and has won numerous New Zealand Country Music awards, including “Best Female Country Singer” and “Best Country Album.” Bell has spent the last few years between Australia and Nashville and touring with acts such as Morgan Evans, The Dixie Chicks, and the king of Australian country, Keith Urban.
Urban, always one to help promote and help out young artists, took Bell out on tour with him twice. Which may explain Bell’s latest single “Keith.” Think of a more fun, upbeat version of Taylor Swift’s “Tim McGraw” but of course “Keith” is sprinkled with some of his top hits.
Classified by many as a country pop artist, you find a lot of different influences in Bell’s music: Top 40, rock, today’s country and even a hint of old school country. “Getting Closer” is a song she wrote with Morgan Evans, a song that ironically would have fit into Kelsea Ballerini’s setlist. Bell mirrors Ballerini in a lot of ways. She’s not afraid to take risks but also being true to herself and her upbringing, which you hear in “Who I Am.” Her rock side includes anthem declaring songs such as “Next Somebody” and “One More Shot.” The two songs are on my current road trip playlist — fun and catchy, with power house vocals.
It’s clear that now is the time for Bell to crack into the US country music scene. She has the singing and songwriting talent. She’s been in the business for years and knows exactly what she is capable of and how to get there. There’s no telling how far she will go.
