Throwback Jam: Born to Fly

The year was 2000 and country music was alive and kicking with powerful female actsTrisha, Shania, Reba….the list goes on. Onto the scene pops Sara Evans and it didn’t take long for her to make her presence known.

In October that year, Evans released her album Born to Fly. The title track to the album was released earlier that year in June and became her second number one song, reaching number 34 on the ‘All Genre Billboard charts.’

Evans co-wrote the song with Marcus Hummon (“Cowboy Take Me Away,” “Bless the Broken Road”) and Darrell Scott (“It’s a Great Day to Be Alive). Singing to the universal feeling of wanting to break out and make your own way in the world, “Born to Fly” struck all the right chords with fans. The music video is the icing on the cake to an already catchy song.

Winning CMA Video of the Year in 2001, the video takes cues from the Wizard of Oz. Evans plays a Dorthy-like character, amonst a supporting ensemble, that even includes a scene of a house spinning in a tornado. All the while, she obliviously sings on the couch.

Ah, the early 2000s. Truly a golden age for music videos as well as Sara Evans, who showed the country world she was here to stay with “Born to Fly.”
