The late 90s and early 2000s was such a dominating time for women in country music. We can all agree the first few names that come to mind include: Faith, Reba, Shania and the Dixie Chicks. But another all-female group comprised of a sister trio, also held their ground amongst a plethora of household names.
SHeDAISY released their debut album in 1999, and while most may remember their debut single “Little Good-Byes” it was with their third single “I Will…But” that the group earned their highest rated single. The hit made it all the way to number two on the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks.
This song has some of the most feisty, woman empowering lyrics that you may find in a song, and yet it still comes off as something of a love song. The song has key phrases such as, “I won’t be your Martha Stewart…or your all night restaurant,” and “I won’t be your obligation…I won’t be your Barbie doll.” I could quote the entire song as there is not a bad verse in this three and a half minute masterpiece. Plus, this song incorporates the word “Shebang” multiple times. I can’t think of any other song, country or not, that has ever done that.
SHeDAISY was an intricate part of early 2000s country, with their fun, carefree, sassy style, which is shown off in this throwback “I Will…But.”
